 Abstract:  The Greater Cleveland Congress-International Women's Year was a women's convention held in Cleveland, Ohio, October 25-27, 1975, in observance of the International Women's Year. Presentations included arts and crafts booths, dramatic presentation workshops, and seminars, concerning a variety of women's issues. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of congress participants, including Ruth Miller, Lily Tomlin, Dr. Sonya Friedman, and Tippy Huntley. Alson includes views of events and exhibits at the congress, exhibit booths, and photographs of women around the world at various kinds of work.

 Abstract:  The League of Women Voters was formed in 1920 in Cleveland, Ohio, by former suffragists and members of the Woman's Suffrage Party. The League is nonpartisan and has endorsed various legislation, including laws to protect female workers and improve child welfare and education. Its efforts include voter registration drives, assistance to election boards, demonstrations of registration and voting techniques, as well as sponsoring candidates debates. The collection consists of photographs of members and activities engaged in or sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Cleveland. Included in the photographs is a group portrait in front of the Woman Suffrage Headquarters, ca. 1912, that includes Belle Sherwin and Florence Allen. Other photographs are of the October 3, 1914, Ohio Women's Suffrage Parade in Cleveland, Ohio. Pictured are Mrs. George F. Forest, the Men's League for Equal Suffrage, the Progressive Party float, and the Ohio County Committees for Women's Suffrage. Photographs of League displays and buildings include views of the National League of Women Voters building, a straw vote display, and various voter registration displays. Group portraits, taken at League activities, include Carl Stokes, Mary Jayne Willis, Anthony Celebrezze, Robert Montgomery, Mrs. John C. Lee, Mrs. Charles Bing, Mrs. Malcolm McBride, Mrs. Maz Hellman, Mrs. Howard Law, Mrs. Melvin Ott, Mrs. Durrell Haag, Mrs. William Merriman, Mrs. Norman Davies, Mrs. Duane Willis, Miss Grace Treat, and Judge Mary B. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of women active in the organization, including Ruth Einstein, credited with the idea of Council Gardens, and past presidents Isabelle Brown, Iris Curtis, Ernestine Greenberger, Maddy Joseph, Betty Mintz, Barbara Sobel, Jo Tramer, Yetta Wasserman, and Peggy Wasserstrom. Group portraits and views document the varied activities taken on by the Cleveland Section in the 1960s and 1970s, including the preparation of the Access Guide to Cleveland Disabled and Elderly Individuals, volunteer work at Mount Pleasant Community Center, Thrift Shops, and the establishment of Council Gardens in 1963 and Council House in 1979. National activities are represented by views of various conventions and legislative meetings with congressmen Tom Lantos and Charles Vanik and senators John Glenn and Howard Metzenbaum. International activities include Ship-a-Box, which sent toys to Israel. Also included are views of fashion shows and luncheons, popular social and fundraising events. Important early views include the "Beehive Booth," a fund raising event at Grays Armory in 1897, a Camp Wise view form 1907, and a Big Sister scene from 1919.

 Abstract:  WomenSpace (1975-1995) was a Cleveland, Ohio, organization designed to bring together existing women's organizations to promote women's advocacy and to allay duplication of services and events. It was inspired by the 1975 International Year of the Woman event, sponsored by the United Nations in its quest to promote human rights. WomenSpace enabled member organizations to share resources and act as a collective power to work for the betterment of women and support social change. WomenSpace opened its first center in the Cleveland Metro Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) in January of 1976 under the leadership of President Roberta Steinbacher and Executive Director Jane Campbell. The collection consists of 48 black and white prints, 4 color prints, 7 negatives, and 5 slides.

She was vice-chairman and secretary of the Cuyahoga County Republican Central and Executive Committees, chairman of the Republican Women's Organization of Cuyahoga County, member of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, a Cleveland, Ohio, precinct committeewoman, and a member of the Ohio Federation of Republican Women's Clubs. She was a United States Customs Collector before running unsuccessfully for Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio state senator and Clerk of the Cleveland Municipal Court. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Albina Cermak in her various posts, including United States Collector of Customs, with officials and employees. There are also Cermak family portraits, and individual portraits of noted politicians, including Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard M. Nixon, and Frances Payne Bolton, inscribed to Albina Cermak.

 Abstract:  Marie Remington Wing (1885-1982) was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer who served on the Cleveland City Council (1923-1927), as Solicitor for the Village of Mentor, Ohio (1929-1936), and as Regional Attorney for the Social Security Board (1936-1953). She was also involved in numerous professional, civic, and health organizations in Cleveland and in Mentor. Wing came from a distinguished Cleveland family, which included her uncle, George Clary Wing, an author and attorney who served in several United States government departments. Marie's father, Francis Joseph Wing, was a judge in the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas and in the United States District Court for Northern Ohio. Her older sister, Virginia Remington Wing, was, like Marie, a social activist, working for the Red Cross, the Cleveland Anti-Tuberculosis League, and the Cleveland Health Council's Health Education Department. She was also the secretary of both the Brush Foundation and the Sight Saving Council. Marie's longtime companion, Dorothy Smith, worked with the YWCA, founded an insurance business, and was an executive for the East End Neighborhood House. Marie Wing's niece, Stephanie Ralph, was a school psychologist, and her husband, Paul Ralph, was also prominent in the academic world. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Marie R. Wing, her family and friends, and views of residences and travels.

She served as a city councilman in Fairview Park, Ohio, from 1958-1962. She was a founding member of Womenspace. Each year, the National Organization for Women and Womenspace confers the Josephine Irwin Award to women contributing to women's rights. The collection consists of photographs depicting Irwin and others at various events, including the Fairview Park Senior Citizens Club Christmas party (1964), the Rocky River Research Club Colonial party (1932), and the Tokyo Women's Club Tea (1966).  Abstract:  Na'amat USA is a Labor Zionist women's organization originally called Pioneer Women. The Cleveland Council was founded in 1926, one year after the national organization came into being. As the organization grew, it was divided into numbered chapters. At its peak, there were fourteen chapters. In 1999, there were four chapters in the Cleveland Council, serving 650 women. Pioneer Women was organized to provide training, educational services, and social services to women, children, and families in Palestine. The Cleveland Council raised funds and sponsored programs that informed the Cleveland, Ohio, community of social service and educational needs in Israel. The national organization also promoted Habonim, a youth organization, and sponsored Jewish and cultural activities. In 1985 the name Pioneer Women was changed to Naع'mat USA, in order to more closely match its sister organization in Israel, Na'amat. The collection consists of 93 individual and group portraits of members, including individual portraits of Clevelanders Sara Halperin and Rose Kaufman, and Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. Also included are views of the Lod Children's Center in Israel, its groundbreaking and dedication; and the Children's Home in Holon, also in Israel. Other views depict group activities, national conventions, other projects and programs in Israel and the United States, and the 60th anniversary celebration.

 Abstract:  Founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1918, as Goodwill Industries of Cleveland by Methodist minister Frank Milton Baker, Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland followed the concepts pioneered by Dr. Edgar J. Helms of Boston, Massachusetts. Its initial purpose was to furnish job training and employment for the aged, poor, and handicapped; and inexpensive clothing and furniture to the community through the processing of donated materials and management of Goodwill resale stores. In the 1930s, it began to focus on the vocational training and employment needs of people with physical, mental, and social disabilities. During the 1960s, rehabilitation counselors, psychologists, and social workers were added to its staff. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of the Board of Directors, Executive Directors, Cleveland journalists, staff, annual meetings and other events. Individuals pictured include Fred Grandy, Ralph Perk, Carl Stokes, Phyllis Diller, Vivian Vance, and Jane Powell. Views of Cleveland-area retail stores, donation processing facilities, Boy Scouts activities, fashion shows, activities of the Women's Auxiliary and Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services, and other vocational services and programs for the physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially handicapped are included.

 Abstract:  John Cumming Johnson moved to Memphis, Tennessee, from Franklin, Ohio, in 1854. In 1856 he married Mary Anne Elizabeth Fisher. They were active in many philanthropic enterprises, especially education. Johnson and his son, William Cumming Johnson, were involved in the cotton trade. William Cumming Johnson was a major stockholder in the Tennessee Fiber Co. and had extensive real estate dealings in Florida. In 1877 he married Sarah Evangeline Harvey. She was the daughter of Charles T. Harvey, a New England structural engineer, and Sarah Van Eps Harvey. "Eva" Harvey married William Cumming Johnson in 1897 and settled in Tennessee, where she was a homemaker and mother. The Johnsons had four sons, Harvey B., Richard Selden, William C. Jr. and Burton Hayley. Lilian Wycoff Johnson, the sister of William Cumming Johnson, was one of the South's pioneer women educators. She served as president of the Western College for Women at Oxford, Ohio, founded the West Tennessee Normal School (now Memphis State College), and established a center for social and cooperative work on the Cumberland Plateau at Summerfield, Tennessee which was called KinCo. It later became the Highlander Folk School. The collection consists of portraits and views of the Johnson family of Memphis, Tennessee, including William Cumming Johnson, his wife Sarah Evangeline Harvey Johnson, his sister Lilian Wycoff Johnson, their family, friends, residences, and travels. Also included in this collection are views of KinCo Farm and Highlander School near Monteagle, Tennessee, founded by Lilian Wycoff Johnson.
